After we collect pieces needed for a project, a mallem or master of zellij draws the design layout directly onto the ground.
This process identifies the exact place for each piece of zellij. each tile is placed upside down, the whole forming an overall design, an additional adjustment is usually required to make sure each piece fits snugly into its correct place.
